Our IETF Internet Draft on Architectural Tenets for a Quantum-Native Internet

We are pleased to announce the submission of the individual Internet Draft to the QIRG (Quantum Internet Research Group), chartered by the Internet Research Task Force (IRTF). The IRTF is an organization parallel to the IETF that promotes long-term research important to the development of Internet protocols, applications, architecture, and technology.

As the first version of an Internet Draft, this document is presented to the community to initiate discussion and gather feedback, marking the start of its possible journey toward standardization.

This draft proposes a set of quantum-native architectural tenets to guide the design and evolution of the Quantum Internet, building upon the framework established by RFC 9340. The principles outlined are intended not as rigid directives but as pragmatic guidelines for harnessing the unique properties of quantum entanglement within networked systems. The proposed architecture represents a significant departure from classical Internet design while adhering to the foundational principle of constant change.

The document specifies key extensions to the Quantum Internet framework, including the definition of an entanglement packet switching paradigm and a formal separation between the Quantum Data Plane and Quantum Control Plane. Furthermore, it introduces the concept of Quantum Internet Addressing to extend essential quantum semantics into network control and coordination, and generalizes the classical forwarding concept to operate with quantum packets.
