The quantum revolution holds immense promise, but its true challenge lies not just in theory, but in practical implementation. To transform this potential into technologies that can redefine computing, communications, and cybersecurity, we must build scalable, reliable systems that integrate seamlessly with our existing digital world.
Supported by the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions programme, the QUESTING project tackles this complex hurdle head-on by training a new generation of 15 doctoral researchers. The programme takes a uniquely holistic approach, merging deep expertise in physics, mathematics, computing, and engineering with essential sociocultural and ethical insights.
This blend of knowledge drives the development of new methods for quantum networking, fault-tolerant system design, and resource-efficient hybrid architectures. By bridging fundamental theory with practical applications—from secure communication to distributed resource management—and fostering strong collaboration between academia and industry, QUESTING aims to position Europe firmly at the forefront of the coming quantum era.
The QUESTING project involves an international consortium coordinated by the South East Technological University in Ireland, and includes 7 other participating universities: Trinity College Dublin (Ireland), TU Delft (Netherlands), University of Naples Federico II (Italy), University of Sarajevo (Bosnia and Herzegovina), Sorbonne Université (France), University of Essex (United Kingdom), University of Cyprus (Cyprus), and VSB – Technical University of Ostrava (Czech Republic).
These are complemented by 11 partners from the academic, research, and industrial sectors, including: Telecom Italia/TIM (Italy), University of Galway (Ireland), IMDEA Networks Foundation (Spain), SURF(Netherlands), AIT Austrian Institute of Technology (Austria), British Telecommunications PLC (United Kingdom), Airbus Defence and Space GmbH (Germany), Centro Regionale Information and Communication Technology (Italy), EURECOM (France), LogiLedev GmbH (Austria), and Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique – CNRS (France).
The consortium integrates multidisciplinary expertise in the field of quantum networks, fostering collaboration between academia and industry for the development of scalable and reliable quantum systems.
