The Quantum Internet Begins with Its Resource: Entanglement

Prof. Angela Sara Cacciapuoti will deliver an invited talk entitled “The Quantum Internet Begins with Its Resource: Entanglement” on June 16, 2026 at 2 pm (Italian time).

The presentation will explore how entanglement, as the fundamental resource of the Quantum Internet, challenges many assumptions inherited from classical networking. The talk will discuss quantum-native architectural requirements, including entanglement-aware control and the limitations of topology-centric abstractions. It will also introduce a flexible protocol organization model based on service intent and node-local state, as well as Q2NS, an ns-3-based simulation framework for the large-scale evaluation of quantum networking architectures, protocols, and policies.

Here is the abstract:
Entanglement is non-local, stateful, short-lived, and consumed when used. These properties make several assumptions inherited from classical networks insufficient for the Quantum Internet. Classical topological-based descriptors alone cannot capture the operational state of a quantum network: the availability, quality, ownership, and temporal evolution of distributed quantum correlations must also be represented. This talk examines the consequences of taking entanglement as the fundamental networking resource. It first discusses quantum-native architectural requirements, including entanglement-aware control and the limits of topology-centric abstractions. It then presents a beyond-layering protocol organization, where network functions are dynamically composed around packet-carried service intent and node-local state. Finally, it introduces Q2NS, an ns-3-based simulation framework for evaluating quantum-network mechanisms, protocol behavior, and architecture-policy interactions at scale.
